Getting your tax returns done
|
| |
| |
Tax returns filed personally whether by paper or through e-tax should be lodged on or before 31 October, but filers who hire a registered tax agent get an extension, as they have their own deadline. However, if you're going to change tax agents or you're trying out the services of a tax agent for the first time, you must contact them by the last day of October.
Registered tax agents can also be found online. You can verify your tax agent's credentials on the Tax Agents' Board list at www.tabd.gov.au (telephone number 1300 362 829).
Get organised as soon as June comes. Keep track of your receipts, and keep them safe for unforeseen audits some years down the road. Remember that different professions can claim deductions on vastly different items. Barbers can claim the cost of scissors, while a public performer can claim the cost of hair waxing.
The ATO will take your declared deductions at face value, but it might start an audit several months or years from now. Having your records intact will turn the odds of surviving the audit in your favour. Keep your notices of assessment, as they contain the information you'll need to send a tax
return online (such as sequence numbers). Use your given name and address as it appears on your notice, then indicate on the return section any changes that might have occurred to your personal information. |
